NEWS

(Sep. 8, 2004) - Canada 5  Slovakia 0 - Slovakia bows out of the tournament with a 5-0 loss to the heavily favoured Team Canada.  Martin Brodeur posted the first ever shutout for a Canadian team in international play.  Canada moves on to face the Czech Republic and Slovakia goes home.

(Sep. 5, 2004) - Russia 5  Slovakia 2 - The "Marian Connection" of Marian Gaborik and Marian Hossa finally got on the board for the Slovaks, but it wasn't enough, as five different players scored to lead Team Russia to a 5-2 win.  Alexander Ovechkin showed the world what he's all about as he scored one of the goals.  Rounding out the Russian scoring was Alexei Yashin, Pavel Datsyuk, Sergei Samsonov and Alex Kovalev.  The win clinches the 2nd seed in the North American division for Russia, while Slovakia ends up in the basement position with an 0-3 record.  Russia will play the U.S.A. and Slovakia will get Team Canada in the quarterfinals.

(Sep. 3, 2004) - U.S.A. 3  Slovakia 1 - The defending World Cup Champions finally started to play like it, scoring twice in the first and getting the game winner late in the third.  Rick Di Pietro played instead of Robert Esche, and no less than five new faces cracked the lineup as the Americans beat Slovakia 3-1.  Jason Blake scored the winning goal and Bill Guerin gave the U.S. some insurance.  The Slovaks are now in the same position the Americans were just 24 hours ago, now with an 0-2 record.  The U.S. will now wait and see how the rest of the round robin goes to see who they will face in the quarterfinals.

(Sep. 1, 2004) - Canada 5  Slovakia 1 - Joe Thornton started the scoring for Canada, and Martin St. Louis continued his heroics with another goal and an assist.  Ryan Smyth scored twice and Simon Gagne also got one for Canada.  Martin Cibak broke Martin Brodeur's heart and the shutout bid in the third period, but it didn't matter as Canada cruised to victory.

(Aug. 29, 2004) - Team Slovakia played their final World Cup exhibition game vs Team Russia at the Corel Centre in Ottawa.  It was the final game of a three game exhibition series in Canada's Capital.  The game ended as a scoreless tie, as both teams appeared to simply play out the string in anticipation of the real tournament (at least we hope).

(Aug. 28, 2004) - Team Slovakia built an early 2-0 lead against Team Canada, as Canada's Wade Redden allowed his Ottawa Senators team mate Marian Hossa to break in on Martin Brodeur and score.  Vladimir Orsagh also scored for Slovakia, but Canada would come back with 2 goals of their own.  Vincent Lecavlier scored his second goal in as many games, and Jarome Iginla batted in his own rebound, as both teams skated to a 2-2 tie.  Peter Bondra would leave this game with a broken wrist.

(Aug. 22, 2004) - Daniel Sedin and NHL teammate Markus Naslund scored as Sweden blanked Slovakia 2-0 on Sunday in a warmup for the World Cup.  Mikael Tellqvist, who recently re-signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs, earned the shutout. He stopped 17 shots.  Sedin's twin brother Henrik, who also plays with the Vancouver Canucks, and Henrik Zetterberg of the Detroit Red Wings set up the first goal 2:24 in.
