(Sep. 14, 2004) - Canada 3 Finland 2
- Canada wins the World Cup.
(Sep. 10, 2004) - Finland 2 U.S.A. 1
- Finland has made their way into
the World Cup of Hockey Championship as they dethroned the defending champs from
the U.S.A. Saku Koivu scored the winning goal and the Americans never
really got anything going as the Finns celebrate arguably their biggest win in
international play.
(Sep. 6, 2004) - Finland 2 Germany 1
- Finland is the first team into
the World Cup of Hockey semifinals. Mikko Eloranta tipped in a shot past
Olaf Kolzig with just 3:22 left in the third period to lead the Finns to a
hard-fought 2-1 win over Germany.
(Sep. 4, 2004) - Finland 4 Sweden
4 - They needed a win to secure
a first place finish in the European pool, but Team Sweden was lucky enough to
escape with a tie, as Tomas Holmstrom scored the tying goal with just 11
seconds left in the third period. Miikka Kiprusoff, as he did so many
times during the last NHL season, shut the door in OT. Finland will now
have the honor of playing last place Germany, and Sweden will play the Czech
Republic in the quarterfinals. Even though Finland scored less goals than
Sweden and both teams have identical W-L-T records, Finland clinches first place
due less goals against with four, giving them a better goal differential than
Sweden.
(Sep. 2, 2004) -
Miikka Kiprusoff
posted his second shutout in as many games and Teemu Selanne
and Nashville Predators defenseman Kimmo Timonen each had a power-play goal
and an assist as Finland posted a 3-0 victory over Germany at the Cologne
Arena.
(Aug 30, 2004) - Team Finland
kicked off the World Cup with a bang,
scoring four times in a 4-0 shutout over the Czech Republic. Miikka
Kiprusoff only needed to stop 12 shots for the shutout, and Niko Kapanen had a
goal and an assist. Saku Koivu, Jukka Hentunen and Mikko Eloranta also
scored for the Finns. The Czechs will need a much better effort than
today if they plan on advancing past the round robin.
(Aug. 26, 2004) - Olli Jokinen
and Ville Peltonen of the Florida Panthers scored two goals apiece Thursday,
leading Finland to a 4-2 victory over Germany in a World Cup of Hockey
exhibition game. Jochen Hecht of the Buffalo Sabres and Christoph
Schubert of the Ottawa Senators scored for Germany. Finland opens the
World Cup European pool on Monday against the Czech Republic in Helsinki.
