(Sep. 14, 2004) - Canada 3  Finland 2 - Canada wins the World Cup.

(Sep. 10, 2004) - Finland 2  U.S.A. 1 - Finland has made their way into the World Cup of Hockey Championship as they dethroned the defending champs from the U.S.A.  Saku Koivu scored the winning goal and the Americans never really got anything going as the Finns celebrate arguably their biggest win in international play.

(Sep. 6, 2004) - Finland 2  Germany 1 - Finland is the first team into the World Cup of Hockey semifinals.  Mikko Eloranta tipped in a shot past Olaf Kolzig with just 3:22 left in the third period to lead the Finns to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Germany.

(Sep. 4, 2004) - Finland 4  Sweden 4 - They needed a win to secure a first place finish in the European pool, but Team Sweden was lucky enough to escape with a tie, as Tomas Holmstrom scored the tying goal with just 11 seconds left in the third period.  Miikka Kiprusoff, as he did so many times during the last NHL season, shut the door in OT.  Finland will now have the honor of playing last place Germany, and Sweden will play the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals.  Even though Finland scored less goals than Sweden and both teams have identical W-L-T records, Finland clinches first place due less goals against with four, giving them a better goal differential than Sweden.

(Sep. 2, 2004) - Miikka Kiprusoff posted his second shutout in as many games and Teemu Selanne and Nashville Predators defenseman Kimmo Timonen each had a power-play goal and an assist as Finland posted a 3-0 victory over Germany at the Cologne Arena.

(Aug 30, 2004) - Team Finland kicked off the World Cup with a bang, scoring four times in a 4-0 shutout over the Czech Republic.  Miikka Kiprusoff only needed to stop 12 shots for the shutout, and Niko Kapanen had a goal and an assist.  Saku Koivu, Jukka Hentunen and Mikko Eloranta also scored for the Finns.  The Czechs will need a much better effort than today if they plan on advancing past the round robin.

(Aug. 26, 2004) - Olli Jokinen and Ville Peltonen of the Florida Panthers scored two goals apiece Thursday, leading Finland to a 4-2 victory over Germany in a World Cup of Hockey exhibition game.  Jochen Hecht of the Buffalo Sabres and Christoph Schubert of the Ottawa Senators scored for Germany.  Finland opens the World Cup European pool on Monday against the Czech Republic in Helsinki.

 

(Aug. 25, 2004) - Markus Naslund scored two minutes into overtime to give Sweden a 2-1 victory over archrival Finland in a World Cup tune-up match at the Globe Arena in Stockholm.  Olli Jokinen staked Finland out to an early lead with a goal just 46 seconds into the contest. Sweden equalized at 6:44 of the third with a Jorgen Jonsson goal.  Sweden outshot Finland, 32-22. Kim Jonsson was named Man of the Match for Sweden while Jokinen received the same honor for Finland.

 

(Aug 23, 2004) - Marek Zidlicky scored a power play goal with 5:02 to play in third period to help the host Czech Republic scratch out a 1-1 tie Monday night against  Finland in a World Cup tune-up match at Sazka Arena.  Jeri Lehtinen opened the scoring for Finland at 5:06 of the second period.
