GAME 1 > Red Wings 4 Penguins 0
Johan who? Detroit's leading
playoff scorer Johan Franzen didn't play, but Mikael
Samuelsson stepped it up and scored two to help give his
team the first win of the series. Chris Osgood only
needed to make 19 saves for his 12th career playoff shutout.
GAME 2 > Red Wings 3 Penguins 0
More of the same for
Detroit. Franzen returned to this game, but it was
Brad Stuart and Tomas Holmstrom who put the Wings ahead 2-0
in the first - a lead they would never relinquish.
Chris "Ozzy" Osgood got his
second consecutive shutout of the final, his 6th straight
Stanley Cup Final win dating back to Detroit's 4 game sweep
of Washington in 1998 - the last goaltender to get back to
back shutouts to start a Stanley Cup final - Martin Brodeur
in 2003.
As for the Penguins - they
need to find some answers, and fast as the scene shifts back
to the Mellon.
GAME 3 >
Pittsburgh 3 Detroit 2
If it's true what they say, Home
is where the Heart is - then the Pittsburgh Penguins could
make a series of this yet - finally able to get on the score
sheet - captain Sidney Crosby managed to get his team the
first and second goal of the game, and the entire team led
by him and veteran Gary Roberts responded. Adam Hall
became somewhat of an unsung hero with the game winning
goal, but it was Roberts doing all the dirty work down low.
Detroit was resilient, scoring two of their own, but this
was Pittsburgh's game and series to lose, and they proved
tonight they belong in the finals. If tonight's game
is any indication of what the rest of this series will be
like, bring on Game 4!!
GAME 4 >
Red Wings 2 Penguins 1
Try as they might, the youthful
upstart Penguins couldn't keep up with the experience and
desire of the Red Wings. They got things off to a
great start with a goal from Marian Hossa, but then Detroit
won all the battles in the corners, and got production from
their captain Nicklas Lidstrom and Jiri Hudler. The
Wings can close it out Monday night at the Joe.
GAME 5 >
Pittsburgh 4 Detroit 3 F/3OT
It was a back and forth affair -
the Red Wings rallied from a 2-0 Penguins early lead, and
were 34 seconds away from a 3-2 win and a Stanley Cup
celebration, when Maxime Talbot sent this game into a
marathon overtime finally decided in the 3rd extra frame.
Petr Sykora scored on a four minute power play, and we will
play a Game 6.

GAME 6 >
Detroit 3 Pittsburgh 2
After falling behind by 2 goals,
twice, the Penguins almost pulled it off again, scoring late
in the 3rd period to get within one goal, and were a split
second away from tying it, but the Red Wings would not be
denied this time. Henrik Zetterberg scored what would
be the winning goal and also took the Conn Smythe trophy as
playoff MVP. Nicklas Lidstrom became the first
European captain to win the Cup, and Dan Cleary became the
first Newfoundlander to win the Cup. The Detroit Red
Wings win their fourth Stanley Cup in 10 seasons, 11th in
franchise history.
